BCS Bowl Preview
December 30th, 2010CAPITAL ONE BOWL (not a BCS bowl)
#9 Michigan State vs. #16 Alabama
(Jan. 1, 1:00 PM ET - ESPN)
Who would have thought at the beginning of this season that Alabama wouldn't be playing in the National Championship game? Or even a BCS Bowl game? I'll never forget watching Mark Ingram receive the Heisman last season and thinking how much sense it made that a 1,700 yard rusher is in touch with his softer side. Watching his neckless, 5'10", 215 lb frame cry grown man tears is a lot like riding a bike for the first time: I was scared for my life and also doing my fair share of crying.

NFL Week 16 Preview
December 24th, 2010Dear Friends At Webster's Dictionary,
I would like to suggest a new definition for the word electrifying. I would like to suggest: Michael Vick, DeSean Jackson. I know first hand they define the word electrifying because I just watched them electrify the Giants. Please let me know what you think.
Thank you very much....

NFL Week 15 Preview
December 18th, 2010This week I'm going to begin with two words, Brett Favre. Okay, now I'm done talking about him and I'm done listening to anyone else talk about him. Am I also done caring about him? That happened in August. August of 2007.
Does the word Playoffs have the letters p-a-c-k-e-r-s in it? What about the letters j-e-t-s or b-e-a-r-s? Surprisingly, it might not. Don't tell me it has the letters 4-9-e-r-s in it. Sorry, you're right, letters and numbers. It's the shock of the thought of the 49ers still being in the playoff hunt.

College Football Bowl Guide
December 17th, 2010Every bowl season, it seems bowl sponsors are even crazier than the year before. The BCS Bowl names are pleasant enough - Fiesta, Sugar, Orange, Rose. You know, things your crazy grandma might sprinkle in your crib to ward off marmots.
It's the lesser known bowls whose names are truly frightening. My rule of thumb: if you can not realistically blend the ingredients into a mojito so bad-tasting that I think I saw Carrie Bradshaw drinking one last weekend in the Upper East Side, it's not a good bowl name.

NFL Week 14 Preview
December 10th, 2010Only four games to go and everyone, teams, fans, TV executives, is of course focused on the playoffs. Who will make it? Who will play their games at home? Will there be any frozen tundra games? How could things be - let's not say fixed, that sounds ugly, let's say arranged - so that the New York teams are guaranteed to be in the Super Bowl? No, no, just kidding. But hey, those poor TV and NFL execs spend their lives pretending to be impartial. Just once they'd like to be able to sit in their luxury boxes and root for the good guys (any NY team of course) as loudly as the rest of us. Or maybe they'll wait until 2014 when the Super Bowl is being played in NY. Waddaya mean the Meadowlands is not in NY? Where is it? Ya gotta be kiddin' me. New what? Jersey? A jersey is not a place, it's what the Jets and Giants wear, isn't it?

NFL Week 13 Preview
December 3rd, 2010Other than the playoffs, the best games of any NFL season happen in weeks 12, 13, 14 and 15. Those weeks are the proving ground, the time when playoff seedings are set. Sure there are important games played in the last week or two but by and large the last couple of weeks are usually less critical than weeks 12-15. By the time we hit the last weeks, most teams have either clinched a playoff spot or have proven that they don't belong. Even if two good teams play each other, the playoff fate of one or both has often already been decided.
